Shared Hosting / Virtual Hosting

Shared hosting (also kown as virtual hosting) is a type of web hosting service where many websites are placed on one server. With shared hosting, you are actually renting a space from a Web hosting provider, sharing space on a server with other websites. To separate the websites and their files, each site is located in its own directory on the server filesystem.

Shared web host is popular for its low cost and ease of setup by the website owners. Some web hosting providers also provide an SLA (Service Level Agreement) for minimum uptime guarantee, which means that if the service in the SLA was not available for more then the specified amount of time per month, the web owner can request a refund from the provider.

Another advantage of shared hosting over dedicated hosting is that one does not need to have technical knowledge to run and maintain the server hardware and its network. In other word, shared hosting is good in the sense you don't need to worry about potential server problems. The hosting company's is responsible for fixing any hardware, server software, and networking issues that may arise.

All you have to do is purchase an account with a hosting company of your choice and they will handle all of the support and maintenance issues that keep your site up and running all the time.

When it comes to selecting a share hosting service provider that's right for you, you should look for a hosting company that have account automation software such as control panels (such as cPanel or Plesk) as part of the hosting package. The control panel allows you to administer your account on the server such as setting up email addresses, viewing site statistics, perform backup, creating sub domains, etc...

As an additional note, when selecting a shared Web hosting service provider, you should also look for one that provide Web statistics (most web hosts provides this for free), so that you can gauge how many visitors your site has and further analyze on how you could improve your site

In summary, share hosting service provides a great solution for entry-level hosting requirements as they are meant to host small web sites with a less then 1000 visitors per day. Although shared hosting is the most affordable, you need to do your homework to make sure that providers have good technical support and hosting features that you will need for your site.
